As my daughter Emma gets older and begins to form her personality, I think about the concept of improving oneself by the company you keep. It's one of life's not-so-obvious facts: one of the best ways to improve yourself is to be surrounded by those who are better than you. Obviously, that's a simplification; taken at face value it can even sound a bit negative by implying you're not as good as everyone else. But perhaps a few personal and professional examples will clarify my point.

What's more fun than going to an interview? Conducting one, of course. I've had opportunities to do just that recently, so I wanted to share a handful of the questions I've come up with to gauge a web developer skill set. So dive in and read through these five questions and their answers. You'll see I prefer more open-ended questions to learn the most about a candidate. Perhaps you'll even share some of your own questions in the comments?

"Half" is this the watchword in this past year's martial arts training. In Feb. 2010, my beautiful little daughter was born and that's the best reason ever for reducing the time in the dojo. But as I started training in Sept. 2007 and my daughter was born at the end of Feb., that's half a year. And during that half a year, I've only been able to attend class about half as often, and even then only half as long. In effect, I've had to prioritize my training and I'm focusing on karate only; aikido will have to wait until time (and energy) returns. But there has still been plenty of advancements.

It was 1992. George Bush—the elder—had just thrown up on the Japanese Prime Minister. Another momentous event took place at MTHS, when Vince DeMiero asked me, an introverted freshman, to join the school newspaper the Hawkeye. And though that request didn't cause quite the international frenzy that George's upchuck did, it sure changed my life. My friend Vince DeMiero is running for Washington State Representative (democrat, position 1) in the first legislative district. He'll be an amazing force in Olympia and deserves your vote and support.

My daughter turned five days old this afternoon. Five days that seem like a year; and I mean that in the best way possible. A year is a long time... think of what goes on in your life in a year. Now, compress that into five days and you'll have an idea of what it's been like since our daughter was born. In that time I've come to realize a few things about fatherhood I'd like to share.

While watching the audtion portion of this season's American Idol with my wife, seeing all those aspiring singers so excited to receive the show's "golden ticket," I was struck by a thought: that's the happiest they'll ever be during their American Idol experience.
Why is that? It's because of that moment. That moment is both a pinnacle of achievement and the beginning of a new, unknown journey.

The short answer is always "Yes." Great advice I've integrated into my work ethic for years now. Never shut down a conversation or brainstorm with a "no, we/I can't do that." Say "yes" now and find a way to make it happen or help the other party understand what's required if they really want it to happen.

About a year ago, a friend asked if I'd read and edit his brother's manuscript. I was honored sure glad I did, because Darin Rice's "The Redemption of Kurt Cobain" is one story that should see the light of day (and not just due to its excellent first-round editing). So what's the story about? Uh... that's a little tricky. The plot weaves strands of politics, philosophy, sustainability, parenting, a bit of humor, and of course rock and roll into a surprisingly readable fabric. It's not easy to find a single label for this work, other than simply "good."
