I punched a bee

I’m not a big fan of the comedy of Dane Cook—he’s a bit too over-the-top for me. But I do like his bit about being attacked by bees. He scoffs and says if bees attacked him, he’d just punch them in the face. “Take that, bee!” Ha ha ha, LOL, ROTFL, etc.

It is this bit of comedy that came to mind as I watched a bee float about me and a friend, Brad Paul, at the beach at Ft. Worden. (I’ll post about our weekend trip to Port Townsend to visit our friends Mike and Brad.) Naturally, I chuckle and start punching the air in front of me, saying, “take that, bee!” Just as I’m about to explain to Brad the Dane Cook bit, the bee heads over to me.

Next thing I know, I’ve actually punched the bee; I felt it against my fist just before I watch it fly arc backwards and land on the rocks at our feet. Incredulous, I exclaim to Brad: “I just punched that bee in the FACE!” Serious laughter erupts and re-doubles as the bee rose up and flew unsteadily away. Was its flight unsteady due to my devastating blow? Hard to say, as bee flight is usually described as erratic or unsteady.

Kids: please remember that fighting should always be used in self-defense, never out of aggression. I’m not proud of what I did to that bee, but really—what business does a bee have at the beach in February?
