In my own vocabulary, I've recently been taking the similar approach of replacing "no, because..." with "yes, if..."
Basically the same thing; it just sounds so much more positive and knowledgeable about the requirements, rather than pessimistic and incapable, as if assuming that the requirements would never be met.

hmm so the short answer isn't always yes =)
I actually got this bit of advice at work the other day myself - something along the lines of regardless of the request say 'yes' - regardless of the feedback say 'thank you'
but I think saying 'yes' all the time to our spouses might make happy marriages? but always saying 'yes' to our children would make for spoiled children ..

@Amy - On that topic I'll have to defer to parents! But I will say that the "Yes" approach to requests from children is probably a recipe for disaster. In a business context, positivity and "yes" work. Children are a whole other ballgame; they need limits and structure in which to grow and learn. You can't tell them "yes" when they ask for a second cookie and then try to reason with them why they can't. Besides, if I did that I must just let them convince me they really do need it!

@Amy - Well, I was writing specifically about business applications. However, I do try to stay away from stating "no" to my wife in most situations :-)
