Whidbey weekend

Whidbey weekend

Harbor Home LodgeThe extended Woodard clan enjoyed another lovely weekend retreat, this time at Harbor Home Lodge on Whidbey Island. It’s been something of a tradition for a few years now. Rather than giving lots of “stuff” to each other at Christmas, we pool money and rent a cabin or fancy home somewhere and have a mid-year retreat. Quite a good tradition, I think.

See photos of the trip here (but come back and finish reading, too!).

Our weekend began on Friday evening, after a bit of a commute and ferry ride over to Whidbey Island (technically, its in Freeland, WA). The home is definitely beautiful, with its big bay windows, huge master retreat, hot tub, big screen TV, and pool table, but suffered from a lack of bathrooms (only two, and one was in the master bedroom). They are constructing a third one downstairs though, which will help. My only complaint—and this is the case with all these vacation rentals—is you have to be out by 11am Sunday. This essentially limits your vacation to an evening and one whole day, as Sunday morning is usually taken up with cleaning and packing.

Rain spoiled part of Saturday and Sunday mornings, though it was pleasant for Saturday afternoon. We were inside at that time though, acting out “Honky-Tonk Homicide.” It’s one of those muder-mystery dinner games. We did one before during a dinner and it was kind of a mess. This time we got into character and acted out our parts in stages, eating dinner in between, which worked much better. Of course, each participant had motive and opportunity, but a twist revealed at the end fingered the Reverend (played quite convincingly by my brother-in-law Dustin).

Other than that, we ate a lot (I cooked breakfast Saturday morning), drank a ton of lattés, talked, played hide-and-seek with Aven, shot pool, figured Sudoku puzzles, took photos, and generally relaxed.

For the record, those in attendance were: Crystal and myself; my brother-in-law Dustin and his wife Katie and their son Aven; my sister-in-law Heather (Magic Joe had to remain in LA); my parents-in-law; both sets of Crystal’s grandparents; and Crystal’s aunt and uncle (though they didn’t stay with us because they live on Whidbey). A full house to be sure!
