My daughter turned five days old this afternoon. Five days that seem like a year; and I mean that in the best way possible. A year is a long time... think of what goes on in your life in a year. Now, compress that into five days and you'll have an idea of what it's been like since our daughter was born. In that time I've come to realize a few things about fatherhood I'd like to share.

He's probably too busy apologizing to care about the difference between these particularly tricky homophones, but the rest of us should care. Learn which spelling goes with which meaning, and a couple mnemonics to keep them straight.

As a standards-focused web developer, I spend much of my client-side development time writing CSS. LESS, the so-called "Leaner CSS," offers a few tricks to enhance CSS code with features like variables, nested rules, and even simple operations (add, subtract, etc.). Sounds great, and it is. But do these and other features outweigh the additional work required to compile LESS files into CSS?

From the same folks who added the warning "cook before eating" to frozen pizza boxes comes this gem of a sign plastered on a gas pump at a station near my house. My first reaction: "what, is this a joke?" But no... it's as serious as the "contains ethanol" sign right below it. More so if the red text and reversed white-on-red "CAUTION" is any indication. So, who needs a sign like this? Much like the warning to frozen-pizza-eaters who chipped a tooth or got a nasty brain-freeze from their frozen pie, this caution must be here because this situation is enough of a problem to warrant it. So, pay attention to it dense people!

Last night was my first kobudo, or Okinawan weapons class. We practiced the bo, a six-foot wooden staff. If you're not familiar with it, think of Donatello of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles--it's his weapon of choice. Though I've trained in karate, traditional goju-ryu karate, and aikido for over two years, I have very limited experience with weapons so I was excited to start taking the monthly kobudo class at my dojo, Northwest Martial Arts.
Weapons possess that "cool factor" in martial arts movies and culture (remember the Meteor Hammer that was used to deadly effect by Gogo Yubari in Kill Bill?), which is part of the reason I want to learn how to use them. But they're sure not easy!

Apostrophes, for being such tiny little punctuation marks, sure can cause some big problems. Mastering their proper use with plural and possessive nouns can be tricky for some, but one use shouldn't be confusing: apostrophes have no place in plural acronyms like "FAQs" or numeric constructions like "the 1980s."

While watching the audtion portion of this season's American Idol with my wife, seeing all those aspiring singers so excited to receive the show's "golden ticket," I was struck by a thought: that's the happiest they'll ever be during their American Idol experience.
Why is that? It's because of that moment. That moment is both a pinnacle of achievement and the beginning of a new, unknown journey.

The short answer is always "Yes." Great advice I've integrated into my work ethic for years now. Never shut down a conversation or brainstorm with a "no, we/I can't do that." Say "yes" now and find a way to make it happen or help the other party understand what's required if they really want it to happen.
