Is NBC’s Olympic coverage biased toward Americans? Uh, yeah.

Like everyone else, I’ve been watching the Olympics in the evening. It’s an amazing event and I look forward to it every four years. But this year, more than ever, I can’t stand the single-minded focus of NBC’s producers: American or (almost) nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of the American [...]

Which body parts are most important for fighting?

What are the most important body parts for fighting? (More specifically, for martial arts in general). Easy, right? Let me guess your answers: fists and feet. Why? So you can punch and kick. If that was your guess, you’re not entirely wrong. But they’re certainly not the most important, I’ve learned.
Disclaimer: I’m certainly not in [...]

Mini Review: The Ruins

It was The Ruins alright… specifically, it ruined my dinner, which I almost lost while watching this one. Not scary, but gory and gross (remember Kathy Bates bashing James Caan’s legs in Misery? The Ruins has a scene that puts that to shame).
In the “pro” column is an excellent concept: [...]

Your dog doesn’t need shoes

“Of course they don’t!” I hear (sane, normal) people thunder when they read this post’s title. “I agree!” I scream back. That’s how passionate I am about dog clothing. We’ve all seen the dreaded dog sweater, which is horrible (note how most of the dogs are chihuahuas or other miniscule purse-living dogs). Yet, in some [...]

PPC Holy Grail: Direct-placement ads?

PPC, or “Pay Per Click” advertising is huge these days, and rightly so. Everyone searches when using the internet, whether it be Google or Yahoo or Microsoft’s Live Search. This integral feature of the Internet is provided free of charge because these companies get ad revenue from the simple text-based ads that appear along the [...]

Why no flags, OWA?

First off: OWA is Outlook Web Access, the web-based version of Microsoft’s e-mail, calendar, and contact manager. Typically you use it when you’re away from your work computer but need to check your work e-mail (to learn the latest office gossip or which benefit the company is cutting next; that sort of thing). Today, I’m [...]

It’s not a stick, it’s a jō

My Saturday evening was spent sweltering in the 88-degree heat of the NW Martial Arts dojo. What possessed me to do such a thing? The jō. Not this Joe, or this Joe, or even this Jo(lene): this jō. The dojo held a seminar on it.
The jō, or short staff, is a great weapon. It’s certainly [...]

Where are they now: “I like turtles” kid

If you’ve been on the Interwebs at all in the last year or so, you’ve probably come across a link to the YouTube phenom known either as the “I like turtles kid” or “Zombie-faced kid.” If you haven’t, that’s odd, but here you go: Zombie Kid Likes Turtles.
Use WordPress for everything

This may be a weird post but I simply couldn’t go on without singing WordPress’s praises. I use the open-source publishing platform for this blog, so if you have no idea what WP is, at least you know you’ve been seeing it.
Until a few days ago, I had been running version 2.1.2 of the software; [...]

Thank you Netflix!

Just got word that Netflix is rescinding their decision to eliminate account profiles. I flipped out about this just recently: I posted a blog entry, wrote them a professional—though annoyed—e-mail, and read a number of tweets by my fellow peeved Netflix users. Someone even created an online petition to keep the useful feature.
As an aside: [...]
